I just hired HOme Depot to replace my roof. I noticed that their price quotes started to creep up right away. I asked them to replace a cracked skylight. The sales person measured the skylight but gave me a quote for a smaller skylight. The project manager then reset my expectation that all of the skylights needed to be replace - a sum of 5 vs 1. He also informed me that the first skylight was a custom order and more costly. When I pushed back on replacing all five skylights and demanded that his workers take the care needed to not break the ones that were not cracked he backed off and we are replacing 3 skylights. Then after spending a full day removing half of the existing roof- today I was told that they found multiple layers and that would increase my cost by $2000. I've tried reaching the branch sales manager and have yet to receive a returned call. I've also noticed several complaints online regarding their practices. What can I do to protect myself from being gauged.

Tell them that you are keeping them to their written bid and that you will not pay more. If they do not finish the job you can sue them for breach of contract. Then inform HD of this problem and ask them to fix it. Then contact the Better Business Bureau and make a complaint against the contractor. Then contact the Attorney General for your state and file a consumer complaint against the contractor. That should provide you with a resolution to your roof repair problems. Best wishes.
